Urea-based fert stewardship advice explained
From 1st April this year stewardship guidance states that inhibitors should be included with urea-based fertilisers, both solid and liquid. As things stand, we can currently apply urea-based fertiliser before this (up to 31st March) without inhibitors, however should regulation change, this could mean ALL applications would require an inhibitor.
As an industry we should be fully supporting this stewardship guidance to prevent regulation being enforced. As a minimum we should be including inhibitors with liquid fertiliser applications from the 1st April. There is also a strong argument to use inhibitor before this period when the risk factors are high, for example applications to bare soil pre-emergence of spring crops.
Not only should we be thinking of inhibitor use for stewardship, but there is also the financial aspect. With fertiliser making up a large proportion of on-farm variable costs, anything we can do to enhance performance and get the most from that investment should be taken.
