OILSEED RAPE CROPS FACING INSECT THREAT
Date added: 30/04/07 |
Oilseed Rape crops up and down the country are now facing real threats from both Mealy Aphids and Seed Weevils, warns ProCam technical agronomist Nick Myers.
“The absence of frost in many parts of the country has led to Mealy Aphids not being killed off during the winter and many crops are now above threshold levels for taking action,” he says.
This combined with above average numbers of Seed Weevils means the main threat for Oilseed Rape growers is now insects rather than diseases, although currently dormant Sclerotinia could flare up if the weather turns wetter.
As with Winter Wheat crops, many Oilseed Rape crops are now physiologically advanced and could enter senescence early if not managed properly, with the ultimate affect of reduced seed production and lower overall yields.
“Oilseed Rape growers should really consider options that keep the crops greener for longer, such as Strobilurins or Boscalid. Amistar, Charisma and Filan would be good choices with both proven greening effects – often keeping crops green for up to 6 days longer than non treated crops – and powerful fungicidal actions.”
Producers also need to ensure they do not skimp on the number of fungicide applications this year, as this too will have a major impact on yields, Nick Myers says. ProCam 4cast figures for 2005/06 show growers used 2.3 fungicides on average in Oilseed Rape with only the top performers getting up to 4 applications.
“Farmers seem to have got the message about the relationship between fungicides, yields and economics in Wheat, but turn a blind eye when it comes to Oilseed Rape, he says.
“The results are the same. Timing of fungicides is critical but so is the number of applications, with 4cast showing a yield advantage of approximately one tonne/ha between a one-spray and a four- spray programme.
